There is an Opioid Crisis in the United States.
In March 2016, the CDC recommended a patient receive no greater than 90 daily morphine milligram equivalents (MME) units (Oxycontin 80mg TID has 360 MME, Fentanyl Patch 100ug/3-day has 240 MME and Hydrocodone 75mg TID has 225 MME) and CIGNA announced they will no longer cover Oxycontin. Physicians and pharmacies are reluctant to write/fill prescriptions knowing the DEA is now monitoring MME units and the OIG is investigating over prescribing.
An unintended consequence is 77 million chronic non-cancer sufferers might not receive needed pain relief.
